Presidency

2024 – 2025
Spain shall hold the Presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean from February 16, 2024, to June 27, 2025.
Currently, the four co-presidencies of the Assembly for the 2020-2026 period are made up of the European Parliament, the Moroccan Parliament, the Cortes Generales and the Parliament of Egypt, who shall take over the next presidency of the Assembly.
The topic chosen by the Spanish Presidency for the meetings to be held during the 2024-2025 period shall be the migration situation in the Mediterranean from a comprehensive perspective.
According to this, during its Presidency, the Cortes Generales shall hold two sectoral meetings to conduct a cross-cutting analysis of all issues related to migratory movements, which shall bring together the Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the member Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean, together with other guest international organizations. One of these Conferences shall be held on the island of Lanzarote and shall bring together the Parliaments of the South of the European Union and the southern shore of the Mediterranean, to deal with the specific challenges posed by immigration with the most affected origin, transit and destination countries. The second sectoral Conference shall be held at the town of Granada and shall be attended by the Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the Parliaments of all member States in a Parliamentary Forum on the Future of the Mediterranean to discuss peace and stability in the Mediterranean, migration, climate change, youth employment and gender equality in the Mediterranean region.
The Ninth Summit of Speakers and the Eighteenth Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean shall mark the end of the Spanish Presidency in the town of Málaga from June 25 to 27, 2025.
Furthermore, the Spanish Presidency intends to hold a meeting of the Bureau of the Assembly in Rome at the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the Assembly offered by the municipality of the said city.
Likewise, during its mandate the Spanish Presidency shall conduct a special verification mission to Cyprus to get to know on the ground the specific situation of this country, declared to be a in “state of serious migratory crisis”.
